Model by Nick Robinson

Rhombic dodecahedron

The video is hosted on YouTube: it only loads when you press Play.

The rhombic dodecahedron is a geometric shape made of 12 (as its name suggests) joined rhombuses. This one is by Nick Robinson, and I chose to turn it into a Christmas bauble. So you will need 12 sheets of standard A format to make it. But be careful: not as big as A4 sheets, unless you want to end up with an enormous origami!!! Here I used A6 rectangles, i.e. 10.5 × 14.85 cm. I also chose 2 colours, 8 red rectangles and 4 gold ones in the centre, but feel free to choose a different colour arrangement. I add a small piece of sticky tape to each unit to lock it; it makes the assembly much easier, and the finished model is sturdier.
