Traditional model (Japan)

Traditional kusudama

The video is hosted on YouTube: it only loads when you press Play.

The kusudama (薬玉), from kusuri (medicine) and tama (ball), is a decorative ball usually made of several origami pieces joined together with thread or glue. Originally, kusudamas were probably made from herbs or flowers, and were used to hold incense or perfume. Today there are a great many origami kusudama models. Here is a fairly simple one, for which you will need 6 squares of paper of the same size and some glue to assemble it. It makes a pretty decoration to hang up or to stand on a shelf.
